This timer is mechanical in design and thus needs no batteries and no electrical outlet. All you do is twist the base to the desired time, set it down, and wait for the bell at the end, indicating the cycle is completed. It can be used in the kitchen or any other place where timing is needed.

This timer makes a slight ticking sound that is loud enough to notice, when in close proximity. It is much like the old wind- up clocks of yesteryear. You can hear it, but only if you are within the same room. The same is true with the end of cycle bell. It rings for about two seconds and stops. If you are too far away, you may miss the signal. On the other hand, it is nice to not have to jump up, run to the timer, and shut it off. Many digital timers will continue to ring or beep until you shut them off. There is no such problem with this mechanical timer.

Cuisinart Stainless Steel Egg Shaped Timer is accurate, but not necessarily very precise. If you need accuracy to the second, then this is not the timer for you. You can eye- ball the small arrow and get it close to what you want, but for precise timings, this Cuisinart product cannot be used. This is, however, only a small disadvantage because for most cooking purpose, to- the- second accuracy isn't important. However, considering that this timer can be used for multiple purposes, there could be some situations where it will not be practical, due to its lack of precision. For cooking, it is perfectly fine because a few seconds here or there will not make any difference.

The Cuisinart Stainless Steel Egg Shaped Timer is a nice little timer for kitchens or other use and I am glad I made the purchase. It takes no batteries, makes little noise, doesn't need to be plugged- in, and can be taken anyplace. I like having it around as a supplement to the timer on my microwave oven. It is easy to miss the sound of the bell, but this is still a good timing device and it makes a nice addition to any household.
