CDN Infrared Thermometer Review

I've used and then owned IR thermometers for years. They used to cost hundreds of dollars.I've used a couple of commercial ones in the kitchen the past few years... they work well, and don't need to touch what is being measured. But they cost about a hundred dollars. This one is $40.The one disadvantage with this one is that the viewing angle for measurement is wide (about 1" at 1" distance); you need to be close. The more costly ones have much narrower viewing angles... you can be further away.Advantages: you don't need to touch what you're measuring, measurements take about one second, and they are accurate. Highly recommended. Good instructions.

BonJour Chef's Laser Probe Combo Thermometer Review

BonJour Chef's Laser Probe Combo Thermometer

I've only hadtwo days to play with this thermometer, but it certainly seems like a winner. The instructions are sometimes wrong with regard to how to operate the unit (you must press the _trigger_ and the up/down arrows to activate the laser/lcd backlight, not the _mode_ button and up/down), but once you figure it out you'll throw away the booket anyway. It does have high/low alarms (for emissive...not sure about the probe) and will do a high/low/average reading set.

I do not have a reliable way to determine whether the emissive temperature is accurate, but it appears to track closely with two of my other probe thermometers for cold-warm temperatures, and is in the right range for oven temperatures and, well, anything I could find to determine the temperature of. The probe seems equally accurate. Both are quick. The probe is comparable to my polder-look-alike, probably a bit faster to be honest. The emissive temp can be checked in a second or less, and can be set to continuously monitor (which would be useful with the alarms and the hold mode described below). When the probe is off, the unit sleeps after 60 seconds, with the probe on it will sleep after a few minutes. According to the manual, the unit will stay active for 1 hour with the "hold" mode engaged for continuous monitoring of emissive temps.

The laser is cute, but not really necesssary, as the sensitivity cone is 1:11, so at 11 inches away, the unit will read a 1" spot. Not really that hard to aim, and I would think the 1" parallax between the laser and thermal lens would cause error for really precise measurements.

The emissivity is adjustable over a very wide range. I believe you can set it as low as 0.10.The default is 0.95. Organics (per the manual) tend to be around 0.97 or 0.98, and it can be set as high as either 0.99 or 1.00 (not sure about the 1.00).

The unit seems sturdy, and the manual claims 140hrs continuous use on the 2 batteries. Obviously, having had it for two days I can't comment on battery life. Otherwise, its been a ball to play with.

Laser BBQ Thermometer Review

Well, it might not have 101 obvious uses, but given some time I bet I can come up with a few dozen tasks this little baby is perfect for.I bought it primarily for use in the kitchen, as I was lacking a method of checking the surface temperature of my frying surfaces on the stovetop.Stovetops are not precision controlled, and high on one may be medium on another, depending on if its an open flame, glass/ceramic enclosed electric element, or raised element. Now I can put my favorite pans on the stove on medium, and watch how long each one takes to get to certain key temperatures for optimal cooking.I use this primarily when shallow frying items, opposed to deep frying. The temperature is off a little between the top surface of the oil and the bottom, but overall its an accurate way to fry small items you'll need to flip once, like a pan of good ol' fried chicken wings, fries, or perogies.

Its also great if you have an electric griddle and want to regulate the temperature, or check the temperature compared to the built in thermostat.Shine the lazer in your oven aimed at the back wall where you'd normally install an oven thermometer, right upon opening the door so you don't let much heat out. This is also good for the grill to check how hot your coals are, and to even see how well your air conditioner is working. When I am cooking, I'll frequently shine the lazer on my outside and inside walls around me to see the average temperature in the room.of course, the outside walls are a degree or two cooler at night, and warmer during the day.:)

The price is *very* right for this item.other similar products cost $150+.I've only had this thermometer for a few weeks now, but I use it daily and it's worked well sofar.I'd reccomend it highly as a household gadget that might surprise you one day by letting you solve a problem you normally wouldn't have a tool for. :)
