Kitrics Keypad Timer/Clock Review

I bought this to replace my broken manual wind-up timer.I was obsessively looking for another good mechanical one, but couldn't find a durable one that doesn't look like some sort of whimsical fruit. After comparing it to everything else out there, I'm glad I bought this one. Here's why:

- It's one of the few timer models with a full number pad.Coming from a wind-up model, I didn't want to stand there repeatedly pushing cheap minutes/seconds keys with ingredient-soaked fingers.

- You can operate this timer with ONE finger, WHILE it's on the refrigerator door. The magnet is large (for the unit's size), is centrally located, and there are little tabs at each corner stabilizing the unit against the fridge surface.I don't know who designs other digital timers, but most seem to have their (usually weak) magnets perched on top of some kind of pedestal.Push a keypad button while it's on it's magnet, and the whole thing teeters off. You'd think this would be the first thing taught at the timer design school. . .

- I don't want to spend too much on a kitchen timer. Some of the others cost twice as much as this one.For the same great "Made-In-China" quality. . .

- It uses ONE watch-type battery, changeable with a coin, unlike the Taylor 10-key (the closest similar model to this one).Other highlights:

- It's also a simple clock. And that's, delightfully, the only other function this device has.

- Using it as a timer, it shuts off automatically after not using it awhile (but still remembers your last time setting when you "wake" it.Very Smart.).

- There's a fold-out hook, in case you want to nail it to the wall. What I don't like about it:

- This timer is small.Tiny, even.I wish I could read it from across the room, but I can't.

- When it goes off, it's only about as loud as a travel clock, and sounds just like one.Not quite as satisfying an alarm as a wind-up bell, although it's loud enough to be annoying. And no, this one doesn't tick. . .

- There's no folding support, so it's not designed for free-standing.The base is flat, though, so you can actually stand it up nervously on a flat surface.Until, say, a toddler strolls in and bumps the table. . .I'm always going to miss the sturdy mechanical kitchen timers that we all grew up with. The Lux one with the little rocket-ship dial that I could actually see while sitting in my breakfast nook (NOT the cheap, incredibly unreliable knock-off versions of it available today).I'd trade digital accuracy for one of those old ones, any day.Unfortunately, no one can make 'em like they used to at this price anymore.

Polder 890-90 Single Kitchen Timer Review

Polder 890-90 Single Kitchen Timer

Got this as a holiday gift for my mom to replace her aging Polder. It was defective right out of the package. The battery would not touch the contacts in the battery compartment.Tried other batteries but no joy.Put in a shim to fill the gap between the tip of the battery and the contact and it worked but then the door would not go back on.When it worked it showed me that it only counts down and stops. The old (>10 year) Polder would count down, ring, and start counting back up so that if you missed the alarm you would know how long ago it had rung. This unit does not have this simple and valuable feature. Also, this unit has flimbsy covers over the button holes that are used in the two timer version. One of these flimbsy covers fell off my brand new unit as it was removed from the package. The warranty is for one year but requires you to pay shipping to and from Poldner, which is about equal to the cost of a new unit.Polder customer service was worthless.I replaced it with a $6.18 Taylor time purchased from Target that worked as expected making it both better and less expensive. The Polder is a complete disapointment and waste of money.

CDN Big-Digit Digital Timer/Clock Review

I have been searching for a kitchen timer that has all these features. The feature I wanted the most was buttons for each individual number. It is very hard to find a product that has this. The individual buttons make it so much easier and faster to set. With other models, you have to hold the Hour, Minute, Second buttons down until the number you want displays.I was also looking for a timer that had a magnet on the back so I could attach it to the refrigerator at eye level. The product description does not mention the magnet for this product. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that the magnet is there as well as a stand. The time display is large and very easy to read.

This little timer is fantastic! It is the same one that Flylady sells (if you don't know who that is, check out www.flylady.net) only hers has her logo on it.If you set it for say, 15 minutes, when it beeps and you stop it, it resets itself for 15 minutes again so you don't have to re-do the timer. It's easy to use and has a magnet for the fridge or file cabinet, and a stand for the counter and it also has a little hole in the back that you can hang it from a cord to put around your neck or hang it from a hook if you needed to.Mine has been through the proverbial wringer and is still working great.

I bought this for my parents who need to take medication every 2 1/2 hours. It is very simple for them to use, and has big numbers that are easy to read.It is hard to find a simple to use timer like this that goes over 2 hours. But this one suits them perfectly. They are in their late 70's.

Sunbeam Programmable Digital Baking Timer Review

Sunbeam Programmable Digital Baking Timer

Compared to some of the reviews I have read on other timers, I like this one better. It has a fairly loud pulsating alarm that goes off until you stop it. It also counts backwards to let you know how long it was ringing if you didn't hear it go off. The stop button automatically resets the same amount of time. You have to press it twice and press the reset to stop it completely. The auto reset would be good if you are slow cooking something. I set it on my bar just across from my stove and can hear it from anywhere in my place. The pulsating sound is easier to hear than a constant alarm.

The clock is redundant since my coffer maker, microwave, convection oven all have clocks. I would like to buy something that doesn't have a clock in it.

CDN TM8 Digital Timer and Clock Memory Feature Review

The things I really like about this timer:

When the timer counts down to zero, the alarm beeps continuoulsy for a minute. Also, a little indicator will come on saying "Time's Up", and the counter start to count up.Also, the time will blink - so if you are using multiple timers in a noisy environment, you can see which timer has expired.

The magnetic clip uses a real magnet that holds more securely than other timer's I've tried. Also, there is a piece of wire that easily flips down to convert the timer into a free standing counter-top unit.

The LCD segments are nice and fat, and has pretty decent contrast.Much easier to read than cheaper counters.

You can assign the count-down duration to a memory button, so that if you're always using the same duration, it only takes two presses to reload the timer duration. The timer is utilitarian -- it's not much to look at -- but it sure works well!
