Polder Dual Probe Cooking Thermometer, Black Review

If you cook meat, you need a thermometer like this one. Turn off the barbeque and/or smoker. Buy one.

I've tried the wireless models, and they're great but unreliable in our setting - some RF source appears to mess them up from time to time. I bough this one to have a failsafe.

My only complaint with this particular model is that the probes are a bit fragile. One probe failed almost immediately due to heat damage at the point where the cable enters the sheath, and there's no stress relief to avoid the obvious threat of damage due to flexing.

I added a heat shrink sleeve to protect the cable/sheath transition, and the second probe is doing well after a year of steady use.

Product Description:
This cooking thermometer from Polder works double time so users can worry less when preparing complex meals. It's designed to monitor one or two items at a time, so users are never left guessing when they need to pop the side dish into the oven to get it ready at the same time as the main entree. This thermometer's two 24-hour countdown timers can monitor one or both items at the same time, and preset Meat/Taste "doneness" buttons allow users to precisely select desired meat doneness. Just set the thermometer to the type of meat cooking, beef, lamb, poultry, etc., then press a button as to desired doneness: rare, medium rare, medium, or well done. Finally, simply insert a probe. It records inner temperatures from 14 degrees F to 392 degrees F. An automatic timer alerts users when meat is done. One can also manually set each timer for specific cooking times on appetizers, casseroles, rolls, or desserts--any combination being prepared for a meal. Users will find it especially convenient to preprogram times for weekly family staples, or dishes frequently cooked.
Made from durable plastic and stainless steel, the thermometer employs two heat-resistant, silicon-coated probes that will withstand high heat oven usage. The extra-large LCD display is easy to read and the thermometer includes a magnet and stand arm for varied position/location use. Use the magnet for refrigerator display and the stand-up arm for countertop display. Two AA batteries are required for power and a set comes included. A USDA cooking chart is also included. Overall, the thermometer measures 4-1/2 inches long by 2-3/4 inches wide by 3/4 inches high. Instructions are provided in English, French and Spanish.

CDN 2 In 1 Probe Thermometer Review

CDN 2 In 1 Probe Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a quite-well-designed probe thermometer made primarily for cooking meat and poultry. It shows the temperature at and near the tip of the probe that's currently in use. When you poke the probe well into the meat or bird, you can see the inside temperature as it cooks; when it's hot enough, it's ready to eat.

As the food heats, dark LCD circles progressively surround colored dots to show progress. When ready, a beeper lots you know; it can be switched off.

It has a wide variety of meats and poultry for which you can set it (no bison or venison!). Following best advice, for some varieties, you can't set it for rare or medium, because they are just not safe.

I didn't buy it for cooking meat or poultry, though; I wanted to use it as a general-purpose thermometer, and it works just fine for that, although it's cold end isn't rated for a freezer. Specifically, I wanted it to tell me when the water's boiling so I can continue cooking hot cereal or such.

Response is nice and fast, settling within half a minute or less, and updates every second or so.

Power is from two AAA (RO3, elsewhere) cells. Power drin must be quite low; a set of batteries should last quite a while. (It does not shut itself off if you forget it.) A wee recessed button inside the battery compartment switches between celsius and Fahrenheit scales. (Nope, no Réaumur -- too few people use it.)

One probe is attached and swivels; it tucks out of the way so it won't be damaged. You'd use that for grilling.

The other probe, at the end of a cable, looks to be of industrial quality; it has braided metal armor over its wire. This probe is meant to be stuck into meat or poultry inside an oven, so the wire is made to withstand oven temperatures; it passes between the door and the body of the stove (or other oven). The thermometer, itself, works only up to 220F. if I remember right, so it's not an oven temperature thermometer; it's only for measuring temperature inside food.

Hardly surprising is that it works nicely as a room temperature thermometer.

Probes have a stainless steel exterior, and are easy to clean.

It seems to be quite accurate (read 212 F. at sea level in a rolling boil), although I don't have calibration equipment.

The instruction sheet (which I've misplaced already -- I usually do better :( ) fails to explain the scheme for the external probe.

The probe cable has a plug at the thermometer end (naturally), and the jack (which means "socket", in the USA(!)) is hidden behind a cover. A spring-loaded slider switches the device to use the probe. That slider also moves a shutter to uncover the probe jack/socket.

An odd molded piece of plastic comes with the unit, and only the barest of hints tell what it's for. You're expected to assemble it onto the plug, so that when you plug in the probe, this piece covers that end of the thermometer body, and helps avoid breaking off the plug accidentally. They don't explain this!!

Looking at the panel, the left-hand metal button with the CDN logo is only decorative; it has no other function.

The device is quite well made. Designed in the USA, it's made in China.

I'm glad I bought it.

It's not inexpensive, but for a device that is critical to food safety, its price is well within reason. As for me, if it's as accurate as I think, I'm glad to have it.

RediCheck Remote Cooking Thermometer Review

RediCheck Remote Cooking Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have been using this wireless thermometer since Christmas 2007.When researching wireless thermometers I liked the idea that this model allows you to set actual temp of the food rather then a setting of 'Well Done' or "Medium Rare'for various kinds of food. What I didn't realize is that we don't neccessarsily know what the ideal temperature might be of various foods based on thickness, size etc.So be aware that this wireless thermometer does what it says it will do you need to know your temperatures for various foods. Obviously I am not the cook in the house!

About the product
This item comes in two pieces. The receiver, which shows you the target temperature you have set that you want to cook to, as well as the actual temperature of the food you are grilling. It has two buttons on the front with up/down arrows.Upon turing on the receiver, which is done via a small black button on the back, you hold both black buttons down together until the display starts flashing with dashes. You then use the up/down buttons to set the intended temperature you want.Let go of the buttons and within 5 seconds (supposedely), the temperature is memorized.

The probe is the typical variety and is attached with a foil type of wire to the transmitter. The trans is non-descript with just a red LED on the front which blinks as the unit is sending out updates to the receiver. There is a push button toggle on the back for off/on and a recessed transmit button that occasionally we have had to push to get the transmitter and the receiver "talking".

Some of the pros -
Probe and foil wire have been very resiliant. Other devices have experienced these wires breaking at the slightest pinch from an oven door or grill lid. This one has proved to withstand basic wear and tear in both the grill and oven. You should be careful with it though when running the wire from the probe to the outside of the oven/grill as I doubt it is unbreakable.

Accuracy - we have found the temperature probe to report accurate food temperatures when compared to non wireless probes inserted into the food for comparison. You gotta be careful though that you insert the probe into the thickest part of the meat/poultry etc and only to the middle of the meat or else you will get inaccurate readings as the probe will pick up actual heat from the gas/coals and not just the food.

Ease of use - it is pretty easy to operate and is fast to register temperatures. It should not be considered a device to utilize for occassional temperature readings by inserting the probe now and then into the meat. The probe needs to remain in the meat and allowed to continuously monitor.

Cons

The transmitter battery cover is secured with 4 very small screws. It takes a jewler's screwdriver to remove them to gain access to the batteries. My only guess here is that because this device could be outdoors in various climates that a secure and tight fit is important.None the less it's a PITB.

Neither the trans or receiver have auto-off power.More then once we have left the receiver's switch in the on position (probably because we were more interested in eating the food then turning off this device) and the batteries expired.
Both units run off 2 AAA batteries.

Build Quality

For the most part these devices are manufactured to withstand over-all day to day use. The housings are plastic and the fittings are true.

Overall a good wireless digital thermometer set from a well-known company. The fact it does not provide "well done", "medium rare" etc.readings is of no fault of the manufacturer. It would have been nice if they provided some hints with various kinds of meats etc. of what temperatures to shoot for but the rather skimpy one page instruction sheet, in various languages, makes no substantiative mention of this.

Considering the price and the good experience we have had over the last few months with this device, I would recommend it assuming you are looking for a unit that provides real-time temperature readings instead of the more typical "well done", "medium well" readings.

Polder Cooking Thermometer with Timer and Clock Review

Polder Cooking Thermometer with Timer and Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great item to have in your kitchen. It makes cook so much easier. You can tell exactly when a roast is done or a chicken is cooked to a high enough temp.
You can set the clock to beep at a certain time, or at a set temperature. I like that it has a magnet on the back. I'm able to store my unit on the refridgerator and use it as a timer too.
It is a small unit and that makes for easy storage.
Although I haven't had any problems with mine yet, I'd just be warned that all over the directions it talks about the damage that water and other liquids can cause. I'm very careful with my unit, but I can see how, with very little effort, it can be ruined by liquids.
I did some research before buying this. I found that there were cheaper ones out there that won't work as well or may have more problems. I also found better quality ones that don't seem so fragile, but they were also much more expensive. For the money, I thought this was one of the best buys.
If something did happen and I ruined this one, I'd buy a new one with out hesitation. It is just that useful to have around.

Common Questions Is the cord between the transmitter unit and meat probe protected somehow? Yes. It is covered in a fire-proof protective metal mesh. Can this be used for cooking in the oven? It is not recommended for use in the oven, it is designed for gas and charcoal grill use. Are the transmitter and probe rain proof? The transmitter and probe are water resistant and sealed against moisture, although we do recommend using common sense and not leaving it outside in a downpour.

Zyliss Meat Thermometer & Multi-Timer, White Review

Zyliss Meat Thermometer & Multi-Timer, White

This is a poor thermometer. The device is an attractive round body with a mode selection wheel around the perimeter. It is much to clever to be useful. The modes are difficult to set. There is no intuitive way to set any of the temperature settings or time settings. If you ever used one of those Chinese stopwatches or wristwatches that require you to press one or two buttons in sequence and divine the setting by looking at flashing symbols with no obvious purpose you can understand what it is like to use this device.

My wife is very irritated when she tried to use this in the past. The probe went dead after just a few uses. That was the best thing about it.Now we don't feel bad about throwing it away.

You'll regret buying this if you do.Find another thermometer.

CDN Wireless Probe Thermometer And Timer Review

This is a terrible product. I had the same problem as the previous reviewer.Because the instructions are terrible, I didn't know if it was defective or the alarm was suppose to go off all the time.I exchanged it but the replacement had the same issues. In addition, the remote only has about a 20 foot range so if you want to work in your kitchen while your barbeque outside, the grill needs to be right under your window. Finally, and call me crazy for thinking this is important, the temperature reading was nowhere close to accurate. When the proble was connected to the base unit I got a reading 10 degrees different than when connected to the remote and 20 degrees different than my two analog thermomters. When it told me the roast was medium, it was as rare as could be.It is amazing companies can sell garbage like this.

I had a Polder (without remote) that worked great. However, when I had trouble finding a replacement probe, I bought this.I am going to ask for my money back and if anyone knows of a wireless that works, let me know.
