Polder Dual Probe Cooking Thermometer, Black Review

Polder Dual Probe Cooking Thermometer, Black

If you cook meat, you need a thermometer like this one. Turn off the barbeque and/or smoker. Buy one.

I've tried the wireless models, and they're great but unreliable in our setting - some RF source appears to mess them up from time to time. I bough this one to have a failsafe.

My only complaint with this particular model is that the probes are a bit fragile. One probe failed almost immediately due to heat damage at the point where the cable enters the sheath, and there's no stress relief to avoid the obvious threat of damage due to flexing.

I added a heat shrink sleeve to protect the cable/sheath transition, and the second probe is doing well after a year of steady use.

Product Description:
This cooking thermometer from Polder works double time so users can worry less when preparing complex meals. It's designed to monitor one or two items at a time, so users are never left guessing when they need to pop the side dish into the oven to get it ready at the same time as the main entree. This thermometer's two 24-hour countdown timers can monitor one or both items at the same time, and preset Meat/Taste "doneness" buttons allow users to precisely select desired meat doneness. Just set the thermometer to the type of meat cooking, beef, lamb, poultry, etc., then press a button as to desired doneness: rare, medium rare, medium, or well done. Finally, simply insert a probe. It records inner temperatures from 14 degrees F to 392 degrees F. An automatic timer alerts users when meat is done. One can also manually set each timer for specific cooking times on appetizers, casseroles, rolls, or desserts--any combination being prepared for a meal. Users will find it especially convenient to preprogram times for weekly family staples, or dishes frequently cooked.
Made from durable plastic and stainless steel, the thermometer employs two heat-resistant, silicon-coated probes that will withstand high heat oven usage. The extra-large LCD display is easy to read and the thermometer includes a magnet and stand arm for varied position/location use. Use the magnet for refrigerator display and the stand-up arm for countertop display. Two AA batteries are required for power and a set comes included. A USDA cooking chart is also included. Overall, the thermometer measures 4-1/2 inches long by 2-3/4 inches wide by 3/4 inches high. Instructions are provided in English, French and Spanish.

CDN Touch Screen Probe Thermometer and Timer Review

I called the company to ask which thermometer to buy. I bought this one because -
1. It does NOT have preset temps. for rare, medium, well done... (we pull red meat, medium rare at 130 degrees). I want to just set the temperature and have it beep when the temperature is reached. This thermometer does that VERY NICELY.
2. The temperature range is past 500 degrees. I figured I had less likelehood of having problems with the thing dying in a hot oven if it had a higher temp range. The last probe thermometer I bought from another company lasted one, yes one use. It took me two years to buy another and so far, it is working like a champ.
3. The thermometer has a tougher wire than most and plugs into the unit with a stereo type plug (not easy to get to). If you pull, the probe unplugs instead of breaking.

The negative - no off and on switch; in order to save batteries you have to remove the back and the batteries..

So far, it has worked really well. The probe wraps nicely around the unit for storage. The digital readout is nice and large.

I find it interesting that the price point is lower because the unit does not have preset temps - a feature that I find annoying and useless anyway. Oh, well, I happily kept my money.

Time will tell if it can stand up to the heat...

Polder Original Cooking All-In-One Timer/Thermometer Review

Polder Original Cooking All-In-One Timer/Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had the Polder 362-90 for about 5 years. I purchased it after seeing Alton Brown using one on the Food Channel show "Good Eats". Now, I'd be lost without it. It takes all the guesswork out of roasting chicken or turkey or a roast beef or whatever else you care to cook in your oven.

You insert the metal probe into whatever you're cooking, set the target temperature and start roasting. When your roast reaches the desired temperature, the Polder will beep to let you know. Perfectly cooked. No wiggling Mrs. Chicken's legs, no pressing on the roast, no "Gee, is it done? I'm not sure." It couldn't be easier.

It has a countdown timer (but not a clock) as well. The back of the main unit has 2 strong magnets which allow it to be attached to any metallic surface, vertical or horizontal. The LCD pivots, so no matter where you put the unit, you can tilt the LCD to make it easy to read. A slide switch on the back allows you to change between Farenheit and Centigrade.

When you wash the probe, you *must* be careful. The probe is a metal tube that contains a temperature sensor. At the point where the cable from the main unit enters this tube, it is sealed merely by crimping the tube. It isn't waterproof. So during washing, if you allow water around this area, it will find its way into the tube and kill the sensor. This is the basis, I believe, for many of the complaints regarding the probe's fragility.

I wrap my hand tightly around the top of the probe when I wash it to prevent this from happening, and I'm still using the original. I use it at least twice a month, so that means it has been used at least 100 times and washed 100 times and it works fine. As far as complaints that the sensor is inaccurate, I've got 100+ perfectly cooked chickens, turkeys and roast beefs that contradict that assertion.

If I have a complaint its that the thing has no on/off switch! Its always running and, therefore, draining the AAA battery. This is not a big deal. The first battery lasted about 3 years and the one in it now has about 2 years of use and is still going strong. When the temperature reads "LO", that is the indicator that the battery needs replacement.

The Polder 362-90 allows you to know when your roast is done instead of guessing at it. I find it essential and I recommend it. Just be careful when you wash it.

***UPDATE 6/2010: After 10+ years of faithful service, my Polder finally quit working. I immediately ordered another. The new one worked accurately twice and then began to underreport temperature by about 30 to 40 degrees F. I tried a backup probe and a new battery with the same result so it would appear to be a problem with the main unit and not the probe. I see that many of the most recent reviews for this product complain of a similar issue. I think Polder may have a manufacturing problem. I would defer purchasing this product until the reviews turn positive again.

Product Description:
An ultra handy and high tech thermometer, the Polder takes a lot of the guesswork out of cooking. It has a pre-settable alarm that works simultaneously with temperature as well as time. Set the alarm to automatically go off when it reaches the temperature you set, or set it to go off when your set amount of time has elapsed. The pre-settable alarm temperature range is from 32 to 392 degrees F, and the alarm is a loud 5-minute alarm. It comes equipped with a longer probe wire measuring 43 inches long. The unit requires one AAA battery for power, and one battery comes included. It also comes equipped with memory for frequently used settings. The Polder makes a great gift idea for any kitchen enthusiast.

Polder 365 Replacement Probe for the Digital 3-in-1 Thermometer (601) Review

Polder 365 Replacement Probe for the Digital 3-in-1 Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered 2 of these as spares for the two digital thermometers I currently own.

All of these inexpensive thermometers - Polder, Taylor and Timex - utilize the same core circuitry and the probes are sourced from the same manufacturer.

One of my thermometers (Timex) is a thrift-shop rescue which had no probe. It works fine with the probe from my Taylor.

Time will tell how durable the probes will be but since I have gotten mine, they have been used in cooking a ham and chicken and seem to be in good working order.

Update 9/04 - No failures yet from my original probe - used to cook chicken, turkey, meatloaf, fish.

I think you need to be really careful and not kink the wires or immerse the probe in liquid past where it joins to the cable.I usually just wipe it off instead of washing it to keep it from getting soaked in water.Of course, YMMV.

We have used many a digital thermometer/timers in a our restaurant kitchen....this one has the features and endures. We brought it to the Bahamas where it now lives in a drawer between visits there and uses. We use it for everything, grilling, any instant read thermo need, continuous thermo reading of roasting in oven, checking and proving oven thermostat. It's also an easy to use timer and clock...and it's loud enough to get your attention!
We haven't ried 'em all, but this one outshines the two or three we've used over the years.

Oneida 31161 Digital Thermometer & Timer Review

Oneida 31161 Digital Thermometer & Timer

I purchased this thermometer and as fate would have it I damaged the probe and need to replace it. THERE ARE NO REPLACEMENT PROBES. This is nothing more than a digital timer now. This is the same item that Pyrex and Sunbeam market but here are no probes available for those either. These seem to be manufactued by the same company.

Product Description:
Keep the oven door closed to keep heat inside, yet know the precise temperature of the food you're cooking! How is it possible? Thanks to the cable and probe which links food temperature information to the digital display, that's how. Additionally this device functions as a 24 hour timer. Set the timer or the temperature and the alarm will let you know when the food is ready. The large LCD read out is clearly visible whether you mount this to a magnetic surface or let it sit on your counter. This Pyrex Accessories 2-in-1 thermometer/timer allows you to measure the temperature (in Celsius or Fahrenheit) of your food as it cooks--without opening the oven door. A thin cord attaches the commercial-quality probe to a digital display screen that sits on your countertop. The true beauty of this gadget is that a timer sounds once the preset temperature of the food is reached, allowing you to read in the other room without having to continually check the temperature reading. This gadget works equally well on the stovetop, and also functions as a simple digital kitchen timer. An adjustable display stand lets you swivel the screen to the angle of your liking, while a magnet on the back of the stand gives you the convenient option to place or store the display on your refrigerator. Too bad the ensemble doesn't have a neat contraption to store the timer and probe together; the nature of the probe makes it difficult to coil, so you end up with a cumbersome mess in the kitchen drawer.

This thermometer is great for any roast. Put the probe in the meat, set the temputure you want, meat comes out perfect every time. This is my second purchase because probe wire eventually failed (after 5 years). Other than that product works great, a must have for bbq season.
