To fully activate the ringer you need to rotate the dial the full hour, then turn it back to the amount ot time you want to measure. When the bell goes off you'll hear it for about 7 seconds.
And it's not just for the chef. I use it to focus on many household tasks such as fifteen minute decluttering sessions or keeping my phone calls to ten minutes. Additionally it's a great motivational tool to help keep the kids on track with their chores in a game of beat the clock.

(More customer reviews)I owned this timer many years ago, and it worked well for me for a long time until the numbers started fading from it. I decided to buy a new one since my oven timer is useless. When I recieved my new Terraillon timer, I was very disappointed. The ringer failed to ring, plus the ringer volume was so low when I forced time on it. I believe it is no longer made qaulity wise but instead qauntity stupid. I bought a digital timer when I was shopping at Target - works like a charm.

(More customer reviews)First of all, this timer is NOT stainless steel; it's vaguely stainless-esque plastic and not very convicing in person.Also I received one with two 60 minute timers, not a 20 minute/60 minute like the picture.That said it seems to work OK and the only other real fault I have with it is that the ring isn't particularly loud; it's OK if you are in the kitchen actively cooking, but if you're sitting on the couch in another room waiting for your pizza to be done you might miss it.If neither of my complaints are a concern to you this might be an OK product for you, but the fact that it is specifically advertised as "stainless steel" and it is NOT pisses me off.But for $12 who's going to complain and send it back, especially when you need a kitchen timer anyway.

I have not actually used it yet only tested it, hopefully it will at least last longer than my old one, which stopped ringing reliably after a year or so.

(More customer reviews)I chuckledas I have read reviews for different timers.I am buying one of these for my daugher -- I already have one.Folks, for a manual timer to work you must first turn it all the way to 60 minutes, then back it up to your desired minutes.The FULL turn winds it so that when it gets to zero it will ring.Hope this is helpful

(More customer reviews)This clock is poorly made and VERY cheap. The shipping cost was more than the clock- my bad for not realizing this! The clock is made of lightweight plastic and the knob on the back easily broke off in my hand. The company did write me and say I could have asked for a refund and they would have given me one. They suggested I retract my feedback so as not to "trash" their company. They also said I had an eyesight problem because I thought the clock looked ivory or white in the picture and it is actually silver.

NOTE: Since this review, the comapny did give me a refund for purchase price and shipping cost. The company redeemed themselves, but the clock is in the trash.
